Volunteer Opportunities at JFS

Volunteer with Older Adults

Friendly Visitors offer companionship and support to homebound older adults.  Some volunteers market with, or for a client, help them sort their mail, or respond to telephone messages.   Many volunteers and their clients go to lunch or the mall, walk or run errands together.  A visit once a week, or even twice a month helps to make our clients feel less isolated.
Time commitment:  One hour, one day per week, or every other week.

Professional Services

Volunteers offer their professional skills, such as medical, dental, legal, electrical and plumbing to name a few, on a pro-bono basis for JFS clients.  This program rotates so that no professional is approached more than once or twice each year.

Mentor Connection is a non-sectarian program that matches responsible, caring adults with Oakland County children and teens to increase their self-esteem and confidence.  Mentors serve as role models and friends.

E-mail Kholden@jfsdetroit.org for more information.

Volunteer Mentors are matched one-on-one with a child or teen. The mentor and mentee spend time together weekly or bi-weekly, doing activities outside of the home or school setting that both enjoy.

Time Commitment:  One or two hours every week or every other week, for at least one year.

Reading Tutors are matched with Kennedy Elementary School in Southfield.  Volunteers are needed to work with first and second grade students who are falling behind in reading and comprehension.                                                  Time commitment: 30 minutes to one hour, one morning per week.
